Les Miserables

So last night, after dinner, I continued a long tradition and went to a movie with a friend. We saw "Les Miserables" with many others. Of course, I had seen it in the theater when it first came out, and enjoyed it then. The movie version is quite different, as it is more intimate and realistic in its singing and acting, and was opened up to include wide vistas of Paris, mountains, and a particularly spectacular scene where the men are pulling a floundering ship into dry-dock. The singing was quite good, especially Hugh Jackman as Valjean, and Samantha Bart as Eponine. One caveat: it was very long. By the end I felt pulverized. In the theater we get a break, but not with the film, and all that intense emotion and singing just got to me after a while. Still, for the fans, it will be a satisfying experience.

Unbelievable Gun Ads

The gun used in Connecticut:
And, the irony is unbearable:

Wielding a gun capable of murdering dozens, including young children, makes you a man. What is it about America that there is a hue and cry around licensing gay marriage while those who are the most anti-gay don't give a shit about saving innocents from gun violence?

50 Years of James Bond Opening Credits

Really cool stuff: it's interesting how the style remained the same througout.

Christian Hate

Pastor David Dykes backs the execution of gays in Uganda:

If these people could, they would do the same here. The constitution protects us - especially our right to speech. But what these theocrats want is as undeniable as it is repellent in a free or humane society.

More BaraYaoi

If you like BaraYaoi (that is, gay male comics featuring big, muscular guys), check out this site, BaraChan. The old site disappeared, but has returned in a new incarnation. It features a wide variety of Bara types: 2D (photos of real men), 3D (drawn BaraYaoi), Furry Bara (anthropomorphic beast men), and various "alternative" drawings. Some examples below:

AFA School Shooting Reaction

Today's horrific school shooting in Connecticut is eliciting emotional and horrified reaction from all over the country. However, the anti-gay American Family Association takes the cake for unbelievable use of hate. Their spokesman spoke today:

Brian Fischer spent the first hour of his radio program today discussing this morning's truly horrific shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, which he, of course, blamed on the fact that prayer, the Bible, and the Ten Commandments are not taught in public schools.
Fischer said that God could have protected the victims of this massacre, but didn't because "God is not going to go where he is not wanted" and so if school administrators really want to protect students, they will start every school day with prayer:

Really, these people are beyond belief. Is there no bottom for their hatred and evil in the name of God?

"Man of Steel"

The new Superman film comes out next June. I am skeptical, but interested to see what the latest incarnation of the man of steel will be like (better than the last, I hope). At least the teaser trailer makes it look cool:

"Star Trek Into Darkness"

The next Star Trek film comes out next May and I am looking forward to it. The official synopsis reads, “Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.”

Hot Man of the Day

Coffee

The Atlantic reports:

Officially, the American Medical Association recommends conservatively that "moderate tea or coffee drinking likely has no negative effect on health, as long as you live an otherwise healthy lifestyle." That is a lackluster endorsement in light of so much recent glowing research. Not only have most of coffee's purported ill effects been disproven -- the most recent review fails to link it the development of hypertension -- but we have so, so much information about its benefits. We believe they extend from preventing Alzheimer's disease to protecting the liver. What we know goes beyond small-scale studies or limited observations. The past couple of years have seen findings, that, taken together, suggest that we should embrace coffee for reasons beyond the benefits of caffeine, and that we might go so far as to consider it a nutrient.

At last, some good news! I love coffee, and can hardly believe that it's actually good for me.
